Corns
Corns, like calluses develop from a buildup of dead skin cells on the foot, forming thick, hard areas. They contain a cone shaped core and the point presses on a nerve causing pain. Corns are a common ailment that typically forms across the tops, tips or sides of the toes. Corns may become inflamed by consistent pressure and friction caused by ill fitting footwear. Some corns may form between the toes. These are known as soft corns.
Cause: High heeled shoes, improperly fitted shoes, stocking or socks can cause corns. Soft corns are typically a result of bony prominences that are located between the toes. They are soft because of perspiration in the forefoot. Bursitis or the development of an ulcer can arise from corns as more serious complications. |
Treatment:
There are ways to prevent and treat the development of corns. Always wear properly fitted footwear with a deep toe box fit to your foot type and shape. Orthotics, whether pre-made or custom, may help alleviate discomfort by absorbing excess shock and shear forces as well as correcting a poor gait pattern. Corn solutions and medicated pads may cause irritation and discomfort. Diabetics and individuals with poor circulation should steer clear of all chemical agents without the authorization of a physician.
