Calluses
A Callus is a build-up of dead skin cells that harden in a localized area of the foot. Callus formation is our body's defense mechanism to protect the foot during excessive pressure or stress force on a specific area. Calluses are typically found on the ball of the foot, the heel, and the big toe area. Some calluses may have a deep core know as a nucleation.
Calluses develop due to pressure on a specific area of the foot. Common causes are: high heeled dress shoes, ill fitting shoes, abnormalities in the gait cycle, bony prominences, loss of fatty tissue on the plantar aspect of the foot, obesity, flat feet or high arched feet. |
Treatment:
DO NOT try to trim or cut calluses away yourself. You should see a health care professional to perform those services for you. It can be very dangerous and possibly worsen the condition, especially if you have insensitive feet or poor eye sight.
Weight should be re-distributed equally with the use of properly fitted, supportive and stable footwear as well as a pre-made or custom made orthotic to further relieve specific areas.
