Mallet Toe
A mallet toe forms when the joint at the end of the toe cannot straighten. The tip of the toe is turned down into the bottom of the shoe. Excessive friction of the toe against the top of the shoes can lead to pain and corns or callusing.
Mallet toes are frequently caused by muscle and bone imbalances. These imbalances may become exaggerated in persons with more active lifestyles that participate in athletic activities. |
Treatment:
Prompt attention should always be given to forefoot deformities such as Mallet toes. Ignoring symptoms may result in a breakdown of tissue and prolonged periods of pain. The goal is to accommodate the deformity by relieving pressure, reducing friction and transferring stress forces from the sensitive areas.
Footwear with deeper toe boxes are most recommended for persons suffering from any forefoot deformities as they will prevent further irritation in the toe area from worsening.
Foot care products such as toe caps, toe shields, toe crests, orthotics, etc. may also be very helpful in alleviating pain or discomfort in the toe area.
